Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. Vieques Demilitarization Petition
There is a new petition to be sent to President Clinton, to Vice-President Gore, to the Secretary of Defense, William Cohen. It calls for the Demilitarization of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Right now a Federal Commission is evaluating the demand, of the people of Vieques and of the Government of Puerto Rico for the demilitarization of the Island which has been occupied by the US Navy since the early 1940s. The ecological devastation caused by the bombardments with live ammunition, including shells with depleted uranium, has led to an alarming incidence of diseases. Vieques has a cancer incidence 26% higher than the Puerto Rico average. It is also the municipality with the highest death rate and infant mortality. Oppose the Navy presence in Vieques by signing this petition at: http://www.e-thepeople.com/petition.cfm?PETID=194539 Clinton will soon receive the report of the Federal Commission. Then he will have to state what the official policy of the US Government will be regarding Vieques. It would probably take you about three minutes to voice your indignation and your support for such a beautiful island that has been for six decades victim of the insensibility of the machine of war and destruction. Once at the web site, you can also select to 'Pass it On' and help promote this petition. Sent by: viequeslibre@viequeslibre.org
