Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. |

![]() March for Our Lives, New York City, August 30, 2004. Scheduled more than a year in advance, this march drew thousands of participants though it did not have a permit. The march was organized by the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (www.economichumanrights.org) whose marches are traditionally led off by people with disabilities and children, those hardest hit by government policies that target the poor. No matter how valiant our [soldiers] are, they cannot fight a war
that is not supported by the people of the country we committed ourselves
to defend.
7 A View from the Streets in
New York
by Rachael Kamel
Retracing the march was what allowed us to feel the spirit of the
day, the energy of the gathering.
7 The Spirited RNC Smart Mobs
by Evelyn Fitzgerald
While the traditional media covered the protests after they took
place, amateur 'smart mobsters' typed out text messages using the keyboards
of their cell phones out on the streets.
8 Breaking the Silence: Israeli
Soldiers on Patrolling Hebron
by Yitzhak Laor
What these ex-soldiers are telling us is common knowledge beyond
the hill, across the checkpoints, in every shattered Palestinian kindergarten.
11 Working for Peace in Israel-Palestine
Just
a few of the many events, organizations, programs, and resources to
help get involved in efforts to bring justice and peace to the region.
12 Understanding and Resisting

For decades the focus on the cold War obscured the continuity of
the US drive for global empire.

20 A Student Visits JROTC
by Hannah Zwirner
It was easy to see how JROTC could be tempting. You are offered more
structure and discipline, and you get a visible recognition, in the
form of ribbons and ropes, of your achievements in the program.
21 Trading Books for Soldiers
The
report presents an analysis of hidden costs to school districts of JROTC
programs, and compares the cost-effectiveness of JROTC to non-military

Plus:
JROTC is a Military Recruiting Program,
Not a "Way Out"
22 PIECES: Events, Gatherings, Opportunities, Campaigns, Resources
24 Home Truths

"Homeland Security" seems like a poor translation of "Heimatschutz." Whatever
happened to "domestic"?
