Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised.

Demonstrators in wheelchairs
March for Our Lives, New York City, August 30, 2004. Scheduled more than a year in advance, this march drew thousands of participants though it did not have a permit. The march was organized by the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (www.economichumanrights.org) whose marches are traditionally led off by people with disabilities and children, those hardest hit by government policies that target the poor. 4 The Long Shadow of Jim Crow:Voter Intimidation and Suppression in America
by the People for the American Way Foundation
As in the past, minority voters and low-income populations will be the most likely targets of dirty tricks at the polls.

6 A Speech for Lyndon B. Johnson
by Howard Zinn
No matter how valiant our [soldiers] are, they cannot fight a war that is not supported by the people of the country we committed ourselves to defend.

7 A View from the Streets in New York
by Rachael Kamel
Retracing the march was what allowed us to feel the spirit of the day, the energy of the gathering.

7 The Spirited RNC Smart Mobs
by Evelyn Fitzgerald
While the traditional media covered the protests after they took place, amateur 'smart mobsters' typed out text messages using the keyboards of their cell phones out on the streets.

8 Breaking the Silence: Israeli Soldiers on Patrolling Hebron
by Yitzhak Laor
What these ex-soldiers are telling us is common knowledge beyond the hill, across the checkpoints, in every shattered Palestinian kindergarten.

11 Working for Peace in Israel-Palestine
Just a few of the many events, organizations, programs, and resources to help get involved in efforts to bring justice and peace to the region.

12 Understanding and Resisting the War Economy
by Joseph Gerson
For decades the focus on the cold War obscured the continuity of the US drive for global empire.

14 The Bloodiest Chapter
by Fred Weir
Independence-seeking Chechen fighters, who are behind the recent wave of terrorist attacks, have been a bone in the Kremlin's throat for almost 300 years.

15 Appeal for an Interim United Nations Administration in Chechnya
We citizens of Chechnya, of Russia, and of the whole world address this appeal with confidence to the United Nations and to all States that hold dear the fate of human life and civilization.

16 Q & A: Crisis in Darfur
Background information from the Africa Program of the American Friends Service Committee

At issue were the back taxes of a member and employee who, as a matter of deeply held religious convictions, refuses to pay taxes that support war.

It was easy to see how JROTC could be tempting. You are offered more structure and discipline, and you get a visible recognition, in the form of ribbons and ropes, of your achievements in the program.

21 Trading Books for Soldiers
The report presents an analysis of hidden costs to school districts of JROTC programs, and compares the cost-effectiveness of JROTC to non-military educational programs.
Plus: JROTC is a Military Recruiting Program, Not a "Way Out"

22 PIECES: Events, Gatherings, Opportunities, Campaigns, Resources

24 Home Truths
by Jim Walch
"Homeland Security" seems like a poor translation of "Heimatschutz." Whatever happened to "domestic"?

Peacework offers news and analysis from the peace movement worldwide. Its perspective is based in respect for all people and a deep commitment to nonviolence. Peacework has always offered subscriptions to prisoners for a nominal $1 per year, and we are committed to continuing this outreach even as the number of subscribers in prison increases, and mailing costs rise.
