Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised.

2 From the editor's desk

4 Instant-Mix Imperial Democracy (Buy One, Get One Free)
by Arundhati Roy
So we know who's paying for the war. We know who's fighting it. But who will benefit from it? Once again, it is a small, tight circle that connects corporate, military, and government leadership to one another

7 50 Years after the Execution of the Rosenbergs: Treason & Patriotism in Post 9/11 America
by Robert Meeropol
While I was only six years old when the United States government killed my parents, I am well versed in the dangers of sacrificing fundamental liberties in the name of national security

9 Utopian Philosopher Adin Ballou: Strategist of Nonviolence
by Michael True
He offered both inspiration and guidelines for living nonviolence, focusing not only on what pacifists can't do, but what they can do as nonviolent activists

10 Faith and Freedom
by Karen Armstrong
Long before western philosophers called for the separation of church and state, Shias had privatized faith, convinced that it was impossible to integrate the religious imperative with the grim world of politics that seemed murderously antagonistic to it

11 Will International Law Shape the Occupation, or the Occupation Shape International Law
by Ian Williams
It could be argued that the only reason the Pentagon is bothering with the UN at all is its own surprising discovery that no one will buy Iraqi oil on the world market without a UN resolution authorizing sales

12 Requiem for a Roadmap
by Adam Keller
Today's lethal attack could be considered a plant well watered and nurtured. And the retaliation which the Cabinet will probably decide upon will launch still another cycle of bloodshed, as happened so many times before

13 Compassionate Listening
by Munteha Shukralla
I am not here to say that you should lay down and accept everything. What I want to say is that there is another way

14 East Timor: Survival, Oil, and Sovereignty
by Esperanza Martinez
East Timor paid a high human price to gain territorial independence. Today all its assets are at risk, as reserves of this magnitude could potentially destroy the country

15 When Uncle Sam Comes Calling--the Scramble for Oil in Africa
by Suraya Dadoo
The impoverished oil-rich countries of the Middle East and West Africa are a stark reminder that oil money does not end up where it is needed most--something that proponents of African development must bear in mind when they decide to hop in bed with American oil executives

17 The Nicaraguan Struggle for Water and Sovereignty
by Arnie Alpert
What is at stake is not only access to water, but whether national sovereignty has any real meaning for a small, poor country in the era of globalization

20 It Doesn't Add Up
by Marty Jezer
"Nothing is more important in the face of war than cutting taxes," said Tom DeLay, the Republican House majority leader. Really?

22 PIECES: Events, Opportunities,
Campaigns, Gatherings, Resources

24 My Country: The World

The distinction between dying for our country and dying for your government is crucial in understanding the definition of patriotism in a democracy

SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR PRISONERS

Peacework offers news and analysis from the peace movement worldwide. Its perspective is based in respect for all people and a deep commitment to nonviolence. Peacework has always offered subscriptions to prisoners for a nominal $1 per year, and we are committed to continuing this outreach even as the number of subscribers in prison increases, and mailing costs rise.

For $15, you can subsidize one-year subscriptions to two of Peacework's many incarcerated subscribers. Make checks payable to AFSC-Peacework, and note in the memo line "Send Peacework to Prison." Your gift is tax-deductible, and should be sent to Peacework, AFSC, 2161 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge MA 02140.
