Professor Neil Wollman of Manchester College is helping to coordinate the Graduation Pledge Alliance, www.graduationpledge.org [5]. Info from www.nonviolentchangejournal.org [6], Spring, 2007.
The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility, initiated at Humboldt State University, says, "I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work."
Students at over a hundred high schools, colleges, and universities are using the pledge to foster dialogues about career choices. It is used to motivate schools to educate about values and citizenship, and to challenge workplaces to evaluate social impact, not just the bottom line.
Pledge takers have, for example, removed racist language from a training manual, promoted recycling programs, worked for gender parity in high school athletics, and helped convince an employer to refuse a chemical weapons-related contract.
