How can we combine nonviolent resistance with electoral organizing?

Sometimes, there are real tensions between engaging in a concerted and principled nonviolent direct action campaign on the one hand, and dealing with electoral politics on the other. Putting this another way, the same major party politician might be voting to fund the US war in Iraq and simultaneously taking stands on Iraq and other issues that are much better than their major party opponent. How have you and your coalitions handled these tensions? How might we deal with these tensions more effectively?
