What If One Day the Guns Fell Silent

By Sam Diener, Peacework Co-Editor, and Dwight Harriman

On Friday June 29, Ethan Vessely-Flad and I co-facilitated a workshop in Writing for Peace and Justice, with seemingly enthusiastic participation by over 20 people. At the end, I invited participants to send me their reflections or their contributions for this blog. The next day, I saw one of the participants, Dwight Harriman, and he asked me to post this.

What If?

What If? For just one way, all the guns of the world fell silent, no
bombs fell, no missiles launched, no bullets were fired? Below the fold...

What If? For 24 hours no one was maimed, no mother lost her son,
no child lost a father, no one lost an aunt or a sister or a brother?

What If? For just one day, there was no war? If just 1440
minutes, the whole world was at peace?

What If? The billions of good decent people in the world took back
their religions from those who have twisted the messages of love and
peace found in all religions into excuses for hatred and destruction?

What If? The prayers of millions of people from throughout the world
manifested as a tangible reality of one day of peace?

What If? We all acted as if Love was the most powerful force in the
universe?

What If? We used the internet to connect the 100s of millions of
people in the world who want peace to the 1000s of organizations
working for it?

What If? Every government official, on every level, everywhere, got
1000s of letters, emails, phone calls, personal visits, and
demonstrations outside their offices, all demanding peace?

What If? We all decided one day just wasn't enough?
